HEADACHE

Headaches are a common occurrence in children. Fortunately, most headaches go away quickly and are due to non-serious conditions. The most common cause of headaches in children is an acute infection such as a virus associated with fever. There are many other causes of headaches. If your child is having recurrent headaches, you should discuss the problem with your doctor’s nurse or your doctor on a non-emergency basis. However, you should call immediately if the headache is:

  • Associated with fever and/or a stiff neck;
  • Associated with a seizure or convulsion;
  • Associated with recurrent vomiting;
  • If the pain is severe and not relieved with Tylenol or Motrin;
  • If there is confusion or hallucinations, or
  • If there are visual symptoms such as double or blurred vision, etc.

If this problem occurs during or after office hours call 345-3133.

For home care of headaches you should:

  • Allow your child to rest and give fluids;
  • Give Tylenol or Motrin in appropriate doses, and
  • Apply a cool washcloth to head.
