HEAD INJURY

Most people will have mild head injuries during their childhood years. Fortunately, they are usually mild with no long-term ill effects. However, some head injuries may be severe and need urgent evaluation and treatment. Please call 911 if any of the following are present:

  • If your child is unconscious;
  • If your child is having a seizure;
  • If your child has an open gaping wound, or
  • If your child is having bloody or watery fluid draining from their ears.

You should contact our office at once if any of the following are true:

  • If your child remains confused or sleepy;
  • If your child has a severe headache that doesn’t improve after 20-30 minutes;
  • If your child has any neck pain;
  • If your child complains of blurred or double vision, or
  • If your child vomits repeatedly – one to two (1-2) episodes of vomiting is common after a head injury.

If you have an emergency during or after office hours call 345-3133.

For the milder head injury without the previously mentioned problems, you may give Tylenol, Advil or Motrin for a mild headache and apply a cold compress to any swollen area on the head.

This advice on head injury is presented as general information and is not meant to be specific treatment for your child’s problem. If you need further assistance, call 855-9160 during regular office hours to speak with one of our Health Information Nurses.
